Gardening tips for January

Now is a good time to check tree ties and stakes on young trees. Make sure the ties are secure, but not so tight that they restrict growth. Any ties that are too tight loosen off a little to allow for expansion.

Keep weeding and cut down any dead herbaceous stems left over the winter that appear diseased or tatty.

At this time of year worms can be quite active, and this is quite noticeable by the worm casts on the lawn. If the surface of the lawn is quite dry, you could disperse them using a stiff broom. However unsightly worm casts may appear, worms do a lot of good in the garden by increasing drainage and by disposing of decaying material.
