Gardening tips for December

Now is the time to prune all your tall bush roses by half, this prevents wind rock. When roses are rocked about a hole can develop causing water to pool around the base. This causes rot, worse still, if this freezes it can damage the root system.

Those plants that were planted in the wrong place can be moved now. Try and retain as much of the rootball as possible. Make sure the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Remember to place compost in the old and new hole to replenish the nutrients. Once planted, consider staking the plant, again to prevent wind rock.

Don’t forget to rake up any leaves that have fallen on your lawns, if these are left they can cause the grass to die off due to lack of light. However keep off the lawn if very wet or frosted over. Keep green and compost those leaves!
