Gardening tips for June

As the threat of frost has gone it’s now safe to plant out your summer bedding plants, in your beds, borders, containers and hanging baskets. Make sure they are kept well watered, particularly in dry periods.

Those spring flowering bulbs can now have their yellowing foliage all cut back as six weeks would have elapsed since their flowering period. Bulbs that are lifted should be dried off, treated with a fungicidal powder and stored, in preparation for replanting later in the year.

At this time of the year the lawn should be cut at least once a week, not forgetting that the less amount of grass removed each time will make the lawn healthier. If a dry period is forecast, don’t cut the lawn too short, as too short a cut will put the grass under duress.
