Gardening tips for September

This month is a great time to plant container grown trees and shrubs. Planting them now will give them a great start for next spring. The soil will hopefully be moist and warm, therefore giving the roots chance to settle in before the start of winter. Don’t forget to stake the trees and keep them watered until the autumnal rains take over.

Lawn grass will start to slow down now, so mowing will be less frequent. Towards the end of the month autumn lawn maintenance can start:

Remove moss and dead grass by scarifying the lawn, using a spring-tine rake and dragging the thatch out (this is back breaking work, so you have been warned!) Mechanical scarifiers can be hired out. This improves the air circulation around the grass as well as surface drainage.

I’ll carry on with lawn maintenance next month…..
