Towards the end of the month you can prune back late flowering clematis which is classed as “Group 3” clematis. In some milder parts of the country they will already be producing shoots. Be very careful as they can be brittle, especially if you are trying to remove last year’s growth. All you have to do is to prune the growth to 25-45cm above ground level from the ground, and pruning above a healthy bud. After pruning, feed with an organic fertiliser and mulch with organic matter. You could also cover the base with gravel or a large stone to provide shade for their roots.
Sounds tedious but make sure that you have all your gardening tools are in working order, check these if the weather is inclement. The last thing you want to do is find that something doesn’t work during the spring and summer months.
