Gardening tips for September

Now is a really good time to purchase a compost bin or those of you who are DIY fans could construct one. Autumn will produce plenty of material for the compost bin i.e. fallen leaves, old vegetable growth. However avoid rose prunings, diseased or woody cuttings.

Herbaceous perennials can be planted this month. The soil will be moist and warm enough, giving the plants roots time to establish before winter sets in. However make sure the plants you purchase are suitable for the position you intend to plant them, and are also suited for the soil type.

Spring- flowering bulbs can be planted now, generally the bulbs are planted two or three times their own depth, alternatively consult the packaging. The only exceptions are tulips which should be planted in November. Buying early should give you a more varied choice of bulbs that are available.
