Gardening tips for April

This month we will see a huge increase in slugs and snails due to warmer days and moist soils. For those of you who are non-organic (tut tut) spread a few slug pellets around those plants affected. For those that are greener try a beer trap, simply a jar sunk into the soil almost to the top, and half filled with beer. Don’t forget to remove the trapped (and dead) slugs and snails, and replenish the beer. Even better is to encourage natural slug predators, like thrushes, hedgehogs, frogs and toads.

Don’t ignore your borders, turning over the soil at this month will improve the appearance of them no end. Keep on top of those weeds also.

As the daffodils flowers fade for another year, remember to dead head them, but leave there strappy leaves for at least six weeks. This way they can build up their reserves for next year’s flowers.
