Gardening tips for August

Keep deadheading roses, this stops the rose from putting all its energy into producing seeds and hips. These in turn will, especially in the case of modern roses produce more flower buds. Prune back to one or two leaflets below the flowered shoots, to an outward facing bud (or alternatively where the leaflet joins the stem). Don’t be afraid to prune back too hard!

Hardy geraniums can be cut back to make them look tidier, with some luck they may flower later in the year. Water well and fertilize to give them a boost.

Even though we are in the height of summer, don’t forget to plant your daffodils and narcissi bulbs. Dwarf varieties are ideal in rockeries, containers or raised beds. Plant the bulb two to three times their own depth. If you have heavy clay (unlikely in Epsom) then place some grit in the planting hole before the bulb to improve drainage. Tulips need to be planted later in November.
