Gardening tips for October

Try to clear up fallen leaves from roses; this will prevent blackspot spores from overwintering in the soil. However please remember not to place these leaves in your own compost heap as this will spread the spores.

Now is a good time to prune back by half tall shrubs like Lavateras and Buddlejas. However by pruning them now, this will tidy up their appearance and will reduce wind rock. Wind rock is where a hole forms in the soil around the stem of the shrub, rain water can then collect here, which could lead to the roots rotting. Lavateras and Buddlejas can be pruned hard back in the spring.

Finish planting your spring flowering bulbs, at this stage they will start to grow and will be sending out roots into the soil. Planting them late will just mean that you get a later show of flowers.
