Gardening tips for October

Trim conifers for the last time this year, particularly Leyland cypress. Be careful not to cut too deeply as most of these trees won’t produce new growth from old wood.

Tulip bulbs can be planted towards the end of this month and next month. Tulips are planted later than other bulbs as they are more susceptible to diseases. Plant these bulbs two or three times their own depth. If you are planting these in heavy clay soil place a layer of grit at the bottom of the planting hole and place the bulb on top of this. This will improve the drainage.

Established lawns should be mown less often, as grass growth starts to slow down. Remember to raise the height of the blade, as cutting it too short will make the grass weaker allowing the lawn to become infested with weeds and moss.
