Now is a good time to give wisteria its summer prune, do this by cutting back all the whippy growth to five or six buds to the main stem. By doing this the climber should produce more flowering buds for the following year. Wisteria will need another prune over winter.
If you have any trees that are producing a mass of shoots from their bases remove them with a pair of secateurs, as this unnecessary growth saps the energy from the tree. Also don’t forget to prune out leaves that have reverted back to green when you have plants that produce variegated leaves.
Those of you that have bought or grown cordon tomatoes don’t forget to pinch out the top growth once four trusses of tomatoes have formed. This gives the remaining fruit time to grow and ripen. Remember to pinch out the side shoots from the leaf axils. Keep feeding tomatoes a liquid fertilizer high in potash.
